{"id":5012,"date":"2016-01-29T09:00:36","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T17:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cohoproductions.org\/old\/?p=5012"},"modified":"2016-02-05T14:04:25","modified_gmt":"2016-02-05T22:04:25","slug":"cast-crew-q-a-with-alison-heryer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cohoproductions.org\/old\/blog\/cast-crew-q-a-with-alison-heryer\/","title":{"rendered":"Cast &#038; Crew Q &#038; A with Alison Heryer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alison Heryer <\/strong>is the costume designer for <em>The Yellow Wallpaper, <\/em>and has designed costumes for theatre, film, and print.\u00a0\u00a0 Her work as costume designer includes productions at Steppenwolf Theatre, The New Victory Theatre, Portland Center Stage, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, ZACH Theatre, Redmoon Theater, and La MaMa.\u00a0 Recent awards include the Austin Critics Table Award for Costume Design and the ArtsKC Inspiration Grant.\u00a0 Heryer holds an MFA in Theatrical Design from the University of Texas at Austin and is a member of United Scenic Artists.\u00a0 She is currently the Assistant Professor of Costume Design in the School of Theater + Film at Portland State University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What inspired you to work with the original \u201cYellow Wallpaper\u201d text?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have always wanted to work on some kind of adaptation of either this or Kate Chopin&#8217;s The Awakening. \u00a0I remember reading these in high school having clear visualizations of what each story looked like. \u00a0When Philip approached me about this project I was thrilled! \u00a0It is such an aesthetically rich project and it has been a pleasure to help bring it to stage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5015\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cohoproductions.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/160112-Y-wallpaper_1451.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5015\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5015\" src=\"https:\/\/cohoproductions.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/160112-Y-wallpaper_1451-580x387.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Harder in The Yellow Wallpaper. Photo credit Owen Carey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are the story and details of this play, set in 1892, relevant today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are certainly in a different world today, however I think that the issues this production bring up about gender and mental instability are entirely relevant. \u00a0One of the ways that we tried to bring this in as far as the costume design is by creating a consciously ambiguous look when it comes to period. \u00a0The general silhouette is there &#8211; long skirts, restrictive necklines for women. \u00a0But many of the fabrics, style lines used, \u00a0and underwear are direct nods to contemporary fashion. \u00a0John&#8217;s costume is probably the closest to what we would consider authentically period &#8211; however I attempted to keep him pretty neutral in reference to the three-piece suit and use contemporary neck-wear.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5014\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5014\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cohoproductions.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/160112-Y-wallpaper_1529.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5014\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5014\" src=\"https:\/\/cohoproductions.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/160112-Y-wallpaper_1529-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Harder and Grace Carter in The Yellow Wallpaper.
