Matter is Mother<\/em> is a one \u00adwoman show set in a private resort in the Bahamas where a mythic sea monster named \u201cLusca\u201d is said to dwell. Throughout the show the audience is coaxed in to this tropical world through character\u00ad-driven monologues, recordings, dances, and songs as each character uses Lusca\u2019s presence to reflect their relationship to the feminine. Drawing a parallel between the collective pressure we\u2019ve placed on females in our society and the mindlessness in which we\u2019ve treated the ultimate feminine force, Mother Earth, this piece offers science cloaked in raucous comedy and solutions for healing wrapped in poetry and performance.<\/p>\n

Julia Bray<\/strong>\u00a0is a performer, writer, singer, dancer, producer and teacher who has lived and created in New York City for the past 10 years. She has performed Off Broadway in multiple productions (including two New York Premiers), and appeared on television in \u201cLaw and Order SVU\u201d, HBO\u2019s \u201cHow to Make it In America\u201d and \u201cBoardwalk Empire\u201d and MTV\u2019s sketch\u00adcomedy show \u201cHey Girl\u201d. In January 2015 Julia founded \u201cALL BOATS\u201d a bi\u00ad-monthly variety show that features new work in theater, film, dance, song, comedy, performance art and beyond. Julia\u2019s writing and solo\u00ad shows have been seen at Dixon Place, Fresh Ground Pepper, Theater in Asylum, The Habitat Theater Company and the variety shows \u201cNew Skin\u201d and \u201cAll Boats\u201d. She produces and directs the music videos for her comedic rap group \u201cSister Wives\u201d, and is a founding member of two sketch comedy troupes \u201cThanks For Coming Comedy\u201d and \u201cEmotional Pizza\u201d. She graduated from NYU Tisch and is currently exploring a bi-\u00adcoastal lifestyle between her hometown of Portland, OR and her Brooklyn turf. \u201cIf there\u2019s one thing first responders do, it\u2019s tell stories.\u201d<\/span><\/i>– The Code Green Campaign<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

First \u00a0responders \u00a0working \u00a0in \u00a0Emergency \u00a0Medical \u00a0Services \u00a0(EMS) \u00a0are \u00a0ten \u00a0times \u00a0more \u00a0\u00a0likely \u00a0to \u00a0contemplate \u00a0suicide \u00a0than \u00a0the \u00a0national \u00a0average, \u00a0and the most \u00a0common \u00a0reason \u00a0\u00a0responders \u00a0leave \u00a0the \u00a0field \u00a0is \u00a0burnout \u00a0and \u00a0psychological \u00a0trauma.<\/p>\n

Created in partnership with the Code Green Campaign, this devised \u00a0performance \u00a0will explore experiences of first responders struggling with and finding paths through trauma. The piece will draw \u00a0on interviews, anonymous stories collected by Code Green and \u00a0art \u00a0by EMS workers to weave a story of shared \u00a0trauma, pride and resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taiga \u00a0Christie<\/b> \u00a0is \u00a0a \u00a0Portland-\u00ad\u2010based \u00a0playwright \u00a0and \u00a0director \u00a0of \u00a0collaborative \u00a0original \u00a0\u00a0works. \u00a0She \u00a0is \u00a0the \u00a0founder \u00a0and \u00a0director \u00a0of \u00a0Faultline \u00a0Ensemble, \u00a0an \u00a0ensemble \u00a0dedicated \u00a0\u00a0to \u00a0creating \u00a0theater \u00a0that \u00a0increases \u00a0community \u00a0health \u00a0and \u00a0resilience, \u00a0and \u00a0has \u00a0studied \u00a0\u00a0community-\u00ad\u2010based \u00a0theater \u00a0for \u00a0social \u00a0change \u00a0at \u00a0Dell\u2019Arte \u00a0International \u00a0Theater \u00a0\u00a0Company, \u00a0Cornerstone \u00a0Theater \u00a0Company \u00a0and \u00a0Sojourn \u00a0Theatre. \u00a0She \u00a0also \u00a0works \u00a0as \u00a0an \u00a0\u00a0EMT \u00a0and \u00a0health \u00a0educator, \u00a0and \u00a0is \u00a0a \u00a0collaborating \u00a0artist \u00a0with \u00a0Children \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0Wild, \u00a0\u00a0company-\u00ad\u2010in-\u00ad\u2010residence \u00a0at \u00a0Double \u00a0Edge \u00a0Theatre \u00a0in \u00a0Ashfield, \u00a0MA. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Taiga\u2019s \u00a0past \u00a0original, \u00a0collaborative \u00a0works \u00a0include \u00a0\u201cSix \u00a0Billion \u00a0Utopias,\u201d \u00a0a \u00a0\u00a0documentary \u00a0performance \u00a0about \u00a0mental \u00a0health \u00a0access \u00a0for \u00a0sexual \u00a0and \u00a0gender \u00a0\u00a0minorities, \u00a0and \u00a0\u201cHolding \u00a0onto \u00a0the \u00a0Sky,\u201d \u00a0a \u00a0community-\u00ad\u2010based \u00a0play \u00a0about \u00a0disaster \u00a0\u00a0preparedness \u00a0and \u00a0health \u00a0access \u00a0in \u00a0Portland. \u00a0\u201cSix \u00a0Billion \u00a0Utopias\u201d \u00a0toured \u00a0in \u00a0New \u00a0\u00a0England \u00a0in \u00a02013, \u00a0in \u00a0partnership \u00a0with \u00a0nonprofits \u00a0working \u00a0to \u00a0increase \u00a0minority \u00a0access \u00a0\u00a0to \u00a0care. \u00a0\u201cHolding \u00a0onto \u00a0the \u00a0Sky\u201d \u00a0was \u00a0recently \u00a0remounted \u00a0in \u00a0Portland \u00a0due \u00a0to \u00a0the \u00a0\u00a0popularity \u00a0of \u00a0its \u00a0first \u00a0run \u00a0in \u00a02014. \u00a0Her \u00a0work \u00a0centers \u00a0on \u00a0pieces \u00a0that \u00a0incorporate \u00a0a \u00a0\u00a0multiplicity \u00a0of \u00a0marginalized \u00a0voices, \u00a0conflicting \u00a0points \u00a0of \u00a0view, \u00a0and \u00a0an \u00a0anti-\u00ad\u2010 oppression \u00a0analysis. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Taiga \u00a0is \u00a0also \u00a0an \u00a0Emergency \u00a0Medical \u00a0Technician, \u00a0a \u00a0practitioner \u00a0of \u00a0trauma \u00a0support \u00a0\u00a0work \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0healthcare \u00a0field \u00a0and \u00a0a \u00a0community \u00a0health \u00a0trainer. \u00a0She \u00a0aims \u00a0to \u00a0use \u00a0theater \u00a0\u00a0to \u00a0explore \u00a0the \u00a0tension \u00a0between \u00a0varied \u00a0experiences \u00a0of \u00a0trauma, \u00a0and \u00a0to \u00a0raise \u00a0\u00a0awareness \u00a0and \u00a0sensitivity \u00a0to \u00a0individual \u00a0and \u00a0collective \u00a0trauma \u00a0throughout \u00a0our \u00a0\u00a0culture.<\/span><\/p>\n
