In government buildings and on college campuses, bombs went off. In cities, looters roamed as riots raged and buildings burned. At demonstrations against the war in Vietnam, protesters were arrested by the tens of thousands. A defeat in Vietnam was imminent. The nation was also mired in recession. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/dock\/1971_strike_history.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labor strikes crippled the workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unemployment soared. So did the crime rate. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/riot-at-attica-prison\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prisons were overcrowded and taken over in riots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Communes were built. Cults formed. Otherwise normal teenagers ran away from home, and had to be \u2018deprogrammed\u2019 after they were brainwashed\u2026 The underground was rising. Terrorists were homegrown. We all have the feeling that we want to complain to the manager, but the manager is invisible. Electronic records of airline ticket purchases were not kept.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/06\/skyjacking-gallery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 1963 and 1971, 160 planes were hijacked in American airspace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airline travel was still considered glamorous and comfortable.
