Four new plays and one video installation from ICP\u2019s 2016-17 student ensemble:<\/b><\/h3>\n

<\/b>Nicola Rossi \/\/ Jake Simonds \/\/\u00a0Sullivan Mackintosh<\/h4>\nICP Fest<\/span><\/a>\n

The annual ICP Fest is the culminating event of the year-long training program at Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble\u2019s Institute for Contemporary Performance, featuring original work created, directed and performed by the ensemble of students who have been training together since August of 2016.<\/p>\n

This festival\u2019s four interdisciplinary performance pieces draw on sources both iconic and personal, using material from classic literature, famous films and historical revelations to explore themes of isolation, individualism, identity and agency. In addition, the CoHo lobby will feature a video installation which chronicles the creative process of ICP student Jake Simonds for one minute per day over the 139 days leading up to the Festival.<\/p>\n

For one weekend only, see the results of laboratory-style ensemble work developed through ICP\u2019s unique approach to performer training and theatrical storytelling.<\/p>\n

Where do we go when we can\u2019t go to sleep? Follow the insomniac as she wades through the residue of life, beginning to slip through the cracks of consciousness into a hypnagogic state. She welcomes the audience to peer out of this telescope of isolation together and explore the connection between an increase of insular lifestyles and the global epidemic of sleeplessness.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017 it’s almost impossible to be completely lost or completely alone. And yet Hollywood keeps cranking out movies where, by increasingly miraculous circumstances, one individual falls dangerously off the grid. <\/span>like nobody’s watching <\/span><\/i>examines eleven recent survival-in-isolation films, co-opting dialogue, gesture and iconic imagery to tell a new story of loneliness in our ever-more connected world.<\/span><\/p>\n

SALT<\/span><\/i>, conceived by Sullivan Mackintosh —\"IMG_3911(1)(1)\"<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n

Cordelia, the virtuous daughter of Shakespeare\u2019s <\/span>King Lear<\/span><\/i>, finds herself banished early in the story and only returns at the end, where her tragic death is a plot device to serve Lear’s redemption. Loosely based on Shakespeare\u2019s story and drawing on elements of absurdism, <\/span>SALT<\/span><\/i> asks us to pull Cordelia out of the peripheries of Shakespeare’s play, leave behind archetype, and step into the storm.<\/span><\/p>\n

About ICP<\/b><\/h3>\n

Institute for Contemporary Performance (ICP)<\/a> is an interdisciplinary training program for contemporary theatre artists. ICP students and faculty are practical and visionary, pragmatic and experimental. Through rigorous daily training, ICP creates a laboratory in which the artist discovers, defines and articulates their individual aesthetic. ICP creates artists and invigorates theatregoers, changing the way theatre is defined.<\/p>\n

ICP was founded by the members of Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble (PETE) in partnership with CoHo Productions and Philip Cuomo. After years of teaching community classes in Viewpoints, Suzuki, voice, clown and more, ICP was created with the intention of building an institution that will train the next generation of bold performance-makers.<\/span><\/p>\n
