The CoHo Resource Center
Introduction
Welcome to the CoHo Resource Center!
We are so excited to introduce you to this very special, brand new space. We have been working tirelessly over at CoHo to prepare a place specially designed for underserved, emerging, working artists in Portland. Our small company is made up of such artists, so we reached out to our community to understand what our people wanted and needed in order to make their art. The response was clear – people need cheap access to quality resources and space. They need a sound studio to record their designs and auditions; they need a copy machine to print off their scripts and scan their notes; they need a computer loaded up with all the newest, most cutting-edge design software; they need both private and collaborative meeting spaces; and they need a black box theater to test it all out in. After years of fundraising, negotiating, and outreach, we are finally ready to give that to Portland, and we couldn’t be more excited to share the CoHo Resource Center with you and our local, creative community.
Our Mission
The CoHo Resource Center supports Portland’s underserved creative community by providing critical artistic education and resources on an income-driven basis. We strive to provide a home for emerging and marginalized creatives to self-produce their own work on their own terms. We believe that equal access to artistic self-expression is a human right, as it enriches our city’s culture, the development of ideas, and our collective emotional connection.
Our Vision
The CoHo Resource Center aspires to create a sustainable hub for Portland artists and community leaders to collaborate, share skills, and complete their projects. We want the Resource Center to work as a template for art-making accessibility that can be brought to scale anywhere people are in need of grassroots education and self-production support. We want people of all income levels to feel welcomed and truly uplifted by our services to create their original work and share it with the world. We believe that this will diversify the kind of art people have access to, bringing us into a more intimate connection and genuine awareness of one another’s experiences. We can do more authentic social problem-solving, community-building, and personal growth when we can ALL freely express ourselves. The CoHo Resource Center believes in people’s right to participate in the world creatively, subversively, and autonomously. We believe that when this is done in community and with sustained support, our connections and resilience are strengthened in the face of our regularly programmed isolation and everyday struggle.
Our Values
The CoHo Resource Center seeks to center, uplift, and provide access to vital resources for all community members in Portland, OR. Regardless of socio-economic status, the CoHo Membership Model is designed on an income-based sliding scale, seeking to be affordable to everyone we serve. Our values reflect our commitment to marginalized individuals in particular, those who might not traditionally have access to the resources needed to bring their latest creative vision to life.
Our community consists of a diverse population, serving BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, sick/dying, neurodivergent, poor, fat, and elderly individuals. Capitalism often oppresses marginalized community members such as these, and at the CoHo Resource Center, we are dedicated to creating accessible, affordable space for all.
ACCESSIBILITY
We believe that access to art and creative tools is a fundamental human right.
HEALTHY DIALOGUE
Lend your voice: Healthy dialogue, respectful debate, and enthusiastic idea sharing are all part of collective life and the creative process.
DIVERSITY
CoHo values art that promotes diversity at every level of production. Everyone is wanted, needed, and welcome.
COLLECTIVE SUPPORT
Connect with and learn from your local community members. Build collective support with artists just like you.
SCRAPPINESS
CoHo values art that uses an efficient economic model, making more with less.
We need to be able to make scrappy decisions around difficult problems.
AUTONOMOUS CREATIVITY
We believe in your right to autonomous production. We want Portland to be full of completely empowered artists,
able to create their own projects without the permission of larger institutions.
