Clown Workshop

Presented by Jusby the Clown
Sept. 11, 2024 from 6:30 – 9:30 PM

Feel the fear and spook ’em anyway with Jusby the Clown. Jusby The Clown will teach the art of Spooky Clown, Butoh and Laughter Yoga. Using exercises from Butoh dance and Laughter Yoga, we will walk the subtle edge of the haunt clown.

Jusby studied Butoh (Japanese post-modern dance) at the Evergreen State College with the late Doranne Crable and was a member and chief videographer of the troupe Kagami for several years. Butoh uses elements of the grotesque, taboo, and absurd in ways that echo the Bouffon clown.

Jusby has been a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader since 2010. Laughter Yoga does not require any special clothes, mats or flexibility but only a willingness to laugh deliberately and authentically. Combining these techniques will give us ways to perform as scary clowns that are safe, appropriate, and profoundly memorable.

Workshop instructions: 18+, wear comfortable clothing prepared to move and vocalize. Both Butoh and Laughter Yoga reach deep emotions, so you should have a plan for adequate support when you return to the world.

About the Facilitator

Jusby the Clown studied dance, multimedia, and the shamanic origins of clowning at the Evergreen State College. In 1996, during “Circus Olympus” he discovered that had already been a clown his whole life. It was both a calling and a right livelihood. After he joined the Red Nose Brigade, an Olympia area clown alley, he began performing consistently at schools, parties and parades. In 2009 he graduated from the Simple Fool’s Silly School of Top Secret Esoteric Clowning.

Jusby continues his studies by attending conventions, workshops, meet-ups and playshares. He’s committed to preserving, promoting, and improving the art and vocation of clown. He’s led clown camps and sponsored internships for First of Mays.

Jusby’s speciality is the pie-in-the-face and claims nearly 1600 #willinglypiedfaces from Olympia, Washington to Washington DC including Canada and Mexico. During the festival he’s offering a Spooky Clown intensive using elements of Butoh dance and Laughter Yoga.
